The VOLT...

The VOLT Power Plant....

All Kidding A Side...
The Volt Is On It's Way
Are You Ready?
Yes if all goes as planed General Motors will begin production of the long awaited
electric car that it has been displaying at all of the recent auto shows. Since 2005 G M
has been working on the electric powered Volt automobile and all the press that is being
released indicates that it is on schedule. The one time world leader in the automobile
industry has finally woke up and thanks to Bob Lutz and his team of engineers and
designers may have a chance to survive the next century of change.

industry has finally woke up and thanks to Bob Lutz and his team of engineers and

This car will have a 150 horsepower electric motor that will power the front wheel at all times. This motor will be powered by Lithium-ion battery pack that is a 16 kilowatt-hour unit that G M will build in their own manufacturing plant. This in house type of production of several items has helped General Motors keep the cost of the Volt project
to a minimum. The volt can be recharged from either 120v or 240v hookup depending on
what is available with the charging time for 120v being 8 hours and less than 3 for 240v.
The real selling point for the Volt is that, thanks to Tony Posawatz's (Volt Vehicle Line Director) insistence, the driving range of the car was extended from a measly 40 miles to over 300 miles.
This was accomplished by adding a non-turbo
version of the Chevy Cruze four cylinder engine. This gas powered engine will generate
power to maintain the charge on the battery and will automatically kick in when the battery charge runs low.
Adding this engine not only extend the range of the car it allows for a smaller Ion battery and thereby reducing the floor tunnel in the passenger
compartment. However if the driver stays within the driving range of the battery between charges you will never need to use any gasoline at all and it will be a zero emission car.
How the EPA does its testing will determine the actual mileage rating of the car.The Volt will truly be an all purpose designed automobile if everything well. It meets all of the crash standards here as well as the rest of the world which means it can be sold world wide.
It can have a fuel cell stack put in place if the gas engine or can be changed to run on E85 fuel. It can be made larger for a luxury sedan or truck
version and be made right or left hand drive.
Bob Lutz has forced G M to take this project seriously and has put some of the best people they have on it to get this program up and running at full speed.
It's seems that he was fed up with General Motors lack of real effort with fuel conservation even
though it is facing the same strict Federal guide lines as all the other auto makers.
He sees the hand writing on the wall and knows all too well that if G M does not move fast it could disappear all together from the automotive landscape. The rest of the world is watching and should that happen it will be one more sign that America is slipping into the realm of obscurity.
